(Yes! I feel like I’ve been in the same place for years.)

Does this happen to you? Worry not! It is very common and very logical. I’m Maura, from Spring Spanish and in this lesson we’ll go over how to track Spanish progress and stop the frustration. ¡Empecemos!

1. Track your language learning progress by taking a snapshot

MAURA
OlvĂ­date de la idea que tienes sobre tu progreso. Vamos a empezar de cero.
(Forget the idea you have about your progress. Let’s start from 0.)

ALEX
ÂżCĂłmo?
(How?)

MAURA
Establece el panorama actual en cada habilidad del idioma: escuchar, hablar, escribir y leer.
(Establish the current picture in each variant of the language: listening, speaking, writing, and reading.)

ALEX
O sea, ¿determino cuál es mi nivel en cada una de esas habilidades?
(In other words, do I determine my level in each of these habilities?)

MAURA
Exacto. Pero no vayas a hacer un test online.
(Exactly. But don’t go take an online test.)

ALEX
Eso es exactamente lo que iba a hacer. ¿Por qué no?
(That’s exactly what I was going to do. Why not?)

MAURA
O sea, claro que puedes. Tú haz lo que te dé la gana, pero mi consejo es que te examines tú misma. Será más efectivo.
(I mean, of course you can. You do whatever you want, but my advice is for you to test yourself. It will be more effective.)

ALEX
ÂżMe lo invento y ya?
(Do I just make it up?)

MAURA
Sí, tomando en consideración tu uso del español, mide qué tan bien redactas, lees, hablas y/o escuchas. Luego puedes repetir esa medición en intervalos de un mes, por ejemplo. Siempre y cuando hayas estado estudiando en el camino, claro.
(Yes, taking into consideration your use of Spanish, measure how well you write, read, speak and/or listen. You can then repeat that measurement at intervals of a month, for example. As long as you have been studying along the way, of course.)

La idea en nuestro diálogo es que pruebes lo que necesites probar. (The idea in our dialogue is that you test what you need to test.) That’s why taking online tests is good for a general appreciation, but less effective in measuring progress. If you’re learning Spanish to apply to university programs, then write academic texts. Record how well you did and repeat after a month or so.

2. How to measure your progress in writing and speaking

ALEX
Vale. ¿Qué me recomiendas para medir la escritura?
(Okay. What do you recommend to measure writing?)

MAURA
Hazte una entrevista a ti misma. Encuentra una lista de preguntas o créala tu misma.
(Do an interview with yourself. Find a list of questions or create it yourself.)

ALEX
¿Qué clase de preguntas?
(What kind of questions?)

MAURA
De nuevo, las que sean relevantes para la razón por la que tú aprendes español.
(Again, those that are relevant to the reason you learn Spanish.)

ALEX
En mi caso es para el día a día. No pretendo estudiar en español, pero sí quiero comunicarme y consumir productos en español.
(In my case it is for day-to-day use. I don’t intend to study in Spanish, but I do want to communicate and consume products in Spanish.)

MAURA
Exacto, entonces incluye preguntas sobre ti y sobre la vida. Las cosas de las que hablamos normalmente. Luego redacta y graba tus respuestas.
(Exactly, then include questions about yourself and about life. The things we normally talk about. Then write and record your answers.)

ALEX
Pero si lo escribo ya voy a saber qué decir en el test oral.
(But if I write it down I’ll already know what to say in the oral test.)

MAURA
Escoge unas para contestar por escrito y otras oralmente. Después de un mes mas o menos, repite y compara.
(Choose some to answer in writing and others orally. After a month or so, repeat and compare.)

It doesn’t matter if you remember what you wrote or said the first time. The important thing here is how much else and how much better you can express yourself this time. I’ll give you a head start at the end of this lesson and I’ll provide you with a sample list of questions I created myself.

Remember you’re not trying to do it perfectly, you’re trying to assess where you are. So, no help and no special efforts.

MAURA
También puedes redactar o grabar el resumen de una peli o una serie.
(You can also write or record the summary of a movie or series.)

ALEX
Ah, eso está bien. Porque siempre puedes decir cosas distintas sobre la misma peli, por ejemplo.
(Ah, that’s good. Because you can always say different things about the same movie, for example.)

MAURA
Exacto. Cada vez que lo hagas deberías poder agregar un poquito más o expresarte un poquito mejor.
(Exactly. Every time you do it you should be able to add a little bit more or express yourself a little bit better.)

ALEX
Y hago lo mismo, lo guardo y luego comparo después de un tiempo, ¿no?
(And I do the same, save it and then compare after a while, right?)

MAURA
SĂ­, la idea siempre es la misma. Es como hacer una foto del estado actual. Luego dejas que pase suficiente tiempo para que hayan cambios. Al final se trata de ir repitiendo y comparando en el tiempo.
(Yes, the idea is always the same. It’s like taking a snapshot of the current state. Then you let enough time pass for there to be changes. In the end it’s about repeating and comparing over time.)

3. Track Spanish progress for your reading and listening

ALEX
Ok, esto me sirve. ÂżAlguna idea para medir la lectura y la escucha?
(Ok, this works for me. Any ideas on how to measure reading and listening?)

MAURA
Esto es aún más simple.
(This is even simpler.)

ALEX
SĂ­, repito la misma peli o el mismo libro y ya, Âżno?
(Yes, I repeat the same movie or the same book and that’s it, right?)

MAURA
Sí, pero te recomiendo productos más cortos. Lee un artículo y ve un video de YouTube, por ejemplo. Es más sostenible si hacer la comparación no te toma horas o días.
(Yes, but I recommend shorter products. Read an article and watch a YouTube video, for example. It’s more sustainable if doing the comparison doesn’t take you hours or days.)

ALEX
Ya. Igual puedo escoger un pedacito del libro o de la peli y ya.
(Yeah. Maybe I can just pick a little bit from the book or the movie and that’s it.)

MAURA
Cierto, pero te lo podrías estar poniendo más difícil. Yo sigo creyendo que es mejor que sea un producto corto que puedas consumir en su totalidad.
(True, but you could be making it more difficult for yourself. I still think it’s better if it’s a short product that you can consume in its entirety.)

Just like you do with speaking and writing record your results. On a notebook, for example. Establish how much you understood, what you think it’s about, what you feel you’re missing. Then repeat after a month and compare your notes.

MAURA
Es muy importante que entiendas este seguimiento del progreso como una herramienta que es Ăştil y motivadora. No es una soga al cuello. No hay resultados buenos ni malos, sĂłlo informaciĂłn Ăştil sobre cĂłmo avanzar.
(It’s very important that you understand this progress tracking as a tool that is useful and motivating. It is not a noose around your neck. There are no good or bad results, just useful information on how to move forward.)

ALEX
Realmente me parece genial porque mata dos pájaros de un solo tiro. En sí mismo, el proceso de hacer seguimiento del progreso me va a ayudar a progresar.
(Really, I think it’s great because it kills two birds with one stone. In itself, the process of keeping track of the progress will help with making me progress.)

MAURA
Exacto, hacer esos ejercicios es muy buena práctica en sí. Y siempre puedes escoger qué necesitas practicar. No tienes por qué medir todo cada vez.
(Exactly, doing those exercises is very good practice in itself. And you can always pick and choose what you need to practice. You don’t have to measure everything every time.)

ALEX
Claro, sino podrĂ­a ser muy largo y tedioso. Voy a tomar en cuenta todos tus consejos y voy a crear mi propio sistema.
(Of course, otherwise it could be very long and tedious. I am going to take all your advice into account and create my own system.)

4. A sample list of questions to set smart goals start

This list of question will force you to work with several tenses. Also, they are purposefully open so each time you use them, you can think about them again.

  1. ÂżCĂłmo pasas la mayor parte de tus semanas? (How do you spend most of your weeks?)
  2. Describe a alguien cercano a ti. (Describe someone close to you.)
  3. Dime algo que pasĂł esta semana. (Tell me something that happened this week.)
  4. ¿Cuáles son tus planes para el próximo mes? (What are your plans for next month?)
  5. ¿Qué tal va hoy? (How is today going?)
