50 Most Frequent Spanish Words Native Speakers Use All The Time
Did you know the 1000 most frequent Spanish words make up about 80% of all spoken Spanish? Learning them is a big “language hack” to understand Spanish more quickly!
I’m Paulisima from Spring Spanish, and to get you started, in this video, I’ll give you the 50 most important Spanish words with example sentences!
Espérenme un momentito por favor. To not make this boring, I won’t be presenting you with isolated words. Instead, I will give you several words and then create a nice sentence out of them. But not before you try it yourself.
¿Listo? Empecemos con la primera palabra…
1. Presidente. Mejor. País. (President. Best or Better. Country)
El mejor presidente de mi país, México ha sido Lázaro Cárdenas (the best presidente en mi country, Mexico has been Lázaro Cárdenas.) Ok fellow Mexicans, don’t get angry. I had to pick a name, ok?

2. Mayor. Parte. Gobierno. Hace. Nada. (Larger-Bigger. Part. Government. Nothing.)
This one is too easy!
La mayor parte del gobierno no hace nada. (The largest part of the government doesn’t do anything). Nowhere, never.
3. Hace. (It has been) Tan. (So.)
Hace años que no estaba tan feliz. (It’s been years since I was this happy.)
4. Parte. Hombre. Tiene. (Part. Man. She/he/it has.)
Por una parte, ese hombre tiene razón. (On the one hand, that man is right.)
¡“Por una parte” este es un chunk de español que me gusta mucho usar! (“On the one hand” is a Spanish chunk that I love to use!) It is the Spanish equivalent of “On the one hand”… Por una parte amo el café, por la otra… ¡me quita el sueño! (On the one hand I love coffee, on the other hand… it makes me lose sleep!)
5. Uno. Otro. Dijo. No. (One. Another. Said. No.)
Y mi frase de ejemplo para usar todas estas palabras: (And my example sentence to use all of these words is:)
Uno dijo que sí y otro dijo que no. (One said yes, and the other one said no.)
6. Ayer. Hizo. Hoy. (Yesterday. Made. Today)
Ayer hizo mejor tiempo que hoy. (Yesterday, the weather was better than today.)
Actually, that is not true! It’s been raining every day! I ¡Ayer no hizo mejor tiempo que hoy! (Yesterday the weather wasn’t better than today.) And yeah, see how we use MADE to talk about TIEMPO.
7. Ahora. Mismo. Vida. Es. (Now. Same. Vida. Is.)
Ahora mismo mi vida es maravillosa. (Right now my life is marvelous.)
Por cierto (By the way) in México whenever we use the word ahora, we tend to use instead the diminutive form of it: ahorita.

8. Hace. (It makes, it has been.) Trabajo. (Job and work)
Hace un año que trabajo de Youtuber. (It’s been a year since I work as a Youtuber.)
También podríamos decir: Hace un año que mi trabajo es Youtuber. (We could also say: It’s been a year since my job is a Youtuber.)
9. Government. State. Thing.
El Gobierno y el Estado no son la misma cosa. (The Government and the State are not the same thing.)
Una Pepsi y una Coca son prácticamente ¡la misma cosa! (A Pesi and a Coke are practically the same thing!)
10. Mejor. Día. Hoy. (Best-Better. Day. Today)
El mejor día es hoy. (The best day is today.)
El mejor día de tu vida es hoy. (The best day of your life is today.)
El mejor día del año es mi cumpleaños. (The best day of the year is my birthday.)
12. Ella. Política. Ya. No. (She. Politics. Already. No)
Ella estaba en la política pero ya no. (She used to be in politics but not anymore.)
¿Sabes lo que piensa ella de la política? (Do you know what she thinks about politics?) ¿Tú sabes? (Do you know?)
13. Tres. Veces. Por.
So… when I was writing for this video, which was not easy por cierto (by the way), and I saw the word tres (three), my mind immediately went to Mexican national treasure: Paquita la del Barrio.
Yeah, you know how Jenny is from the block well, Paquita is from el Barrio! (Paquita is from the hood). Here we go:
Tres veces te engañé: la primera por coraje, la segunda por caprich y la tercera por placer. (Three times I cheated on you: the first time out of spite, the second one on a whim, the third one for pleasure.)
We can do better: Let’s sing it!!!

14. Caso. Formas. (Case. Forms)
En este caso…
Normalmente entiendo muy bien todas las formas de escribir, en este caso… ¡No entendí nada! (I normally understand all types of handwriting, but in this case… I didn’t understand a thing!)
15. De. Hecho. (Of. Fact)
De hecho (As a matter of fact)
También se puede traducir como actually
Paulísima, ¿así que tú naciste en Cancún?
(Paulísima, so you were born in Cancun?)
De hecho, no. Nací en Acapulco, pero crecí en Cancún.
(As a matter of fact, I wasn’t. I was born in Acapulco, but I grew up in Cancun.)
“De hecho” es una expresión que no cambia, no varía, es un chunk de español. (“As a matter of fact” is an expression that doesn’t change, doesn’t vary, it’s a Spanish chunk.)

16. Mejor. Forma. Decir. Con. (Best. Better. Form. Say. With.)
La mejor forma de decir ‘Te quiero’ es con una flor y también con tacos.
(The best way to say ‘I care about you’ is with a flower and with tacos, too.)
17. General, ellos, estaban. (General. They. Were.)
En general, todos ellos estaban bien.
(In general, they were all well.)
18. Momento. Nacional. Millones. (Moment. National. Millions.)
En este momento, la población nacional de México es de 127,6 millones. (At this moment, the national population of Mexico is 127. 6 million.)
19. Lugar. (Place)
Learn this phrase before you come to Mexico because you’ll want to say it every 5 minutes
¡Qué lindo lugar! ¡Qué hermoso lugar! ¡Qué bonito lugar!
(What a cute place! What a beautiful place! What a pretty place!)
20. Algunos. Dicen. Mejor. (Some. They say. Best-better.)
Algunos dicen que Paulísima es la mejor. ¡Y quién soy yo para contradecirlos!
(Some say Paulisima is the best. And who am I to contradict them?)
21. Ella. Días. Nuevo. (She. Days. New.)
Ella va todos los días a un nuevo restaurante. (She goes to a new restaurant every day.)
23. Pasado. (Past.)

Ya lo pasado pasado, no me interesa. (What has passed is the past, it doesn’t matter to me.)
24. Primer. Medio. (First. Medium/Half).
El primer medio de comunicación fue la voz humana. (The first means of communication was the human voice.)
¡Ya quiero ganar mi primer millón… y medio! (I want to make my first million…and a half already!)
25. Grupo. Personas. Partido. (Group. People. Party.)
Un grupo de personas con los mismos intereses puede formar un partido político.
(A group of people with the same interests may form a political party.)
