¡Sí! Es con Ali Wong, ¿te acuerdas?
(Yes! It’s with Ali Wong, remember?)

AMANDA
¿La comediante? ¡Claro!
(The comedian? Of course!)

MAURA
¡Sí! Que es una genio sin duda alguna.
(Yes! She is a genius without a doubt.)

AMANDA
¿Pero la escribió ella?

MAURA
No, pero sí la produjo.

CARLA

Incluso antes de que los actores lo trajeran a la vida. Y es muy fácil de digerir. Sólo tiene una temporada de diez capítulos que duran treinta minutos aproximadamente.
(Very much. Actually everything is super well done. But yes, for me the script is the most important thing, and in this case you can tell how solid it already was. Even before the actors brought it to life. And it’s very easy to digest. It only has 1 season of 10 chapters that last about 30 minutes.)

AMANDA
¿Me dijeron que era en Netflix, no? ¿Cómo no la he visto?

No sé cómo resumirlo.

AMANDA
O sea, pero ¿es de comedia, de misterio o qué?
(I mean, but is it a comedy, a mystery, or what?)

CARLA
Es todo. O sea, por lo que vi me da la sensación de que es seria. No se quedan en la superficie de las cosas. Pero yo me reí un montón igual.
(It’s everything. I mean, from what I saw I get the feeling that it’s serious. They don’t stay on the surface of things. But I laughed a lot anyway.)

MAURA
Tal cual. Al final sigue siendo un drama, si es por género. Pero te ríes y enterneces muchísimo. En términos generales es como sobre el manejo de las emociones. Como cualquier buen guión, es muy humano y por tanto, tiene muchísimas capas y simbolismos. Así que también hay temas de clase, género, religión y cultura incluidos.
(Exactly. In the end it’s still a drama, if it’s about the genre. But you laugh and get very touched. Overall it’s kind of about dealing with emotions. Like any good screenplay, it’s very human and therefore, has a lot of layers and symbolisms. So there are also issues of class, gender, religion, and culture included.)

AMANDA
Claro, porque supongo que si ellos son asiático-americanos, pues la cultura asiática entrará a ser parte de la trama, ¿no?
(Right, because I guess if they’re Asian-American, then Asian culture will come into the plot, right?)

CARLA
Sí, pero me parece que es desde la perspectiva de ser hijos de inmigrantes, más que otra cosa.
(Yes, but it seems to me that it is from the perspective of being children of immigrants, more than anything else.)

AMANDA
Ya. ¿Y por qué se llama Beef?
(Right. And why is it called Beef?)

MAURA
En el primer capítulo lo entiendes en los primeros tres minutos. Justamente esa es una de las brillanteces del guión. La forma y la razón por la que están atados esos dos personajes principales es súper creativa.
(In the first chapter you understand it in the first 3 minutes. That’s precisely one of the brilliance of the script. The way and the reason why those two main characters are tied together is super creative.)

CARLA
Es verdad, no lo había pensado. Pero si esa va a ser la base para seguir desarrollando la historia… qué buena idea.

3. Recommending the Spanish series and Spanish movies

AMANDA

Bueno, yo creo que esta serie es perfecta para todo adulto que tenga un poco de humor negro, como tú.

Y que quiera ver algo muy inteligente pero entretenido a la vez.

Exacto. Y que sea manejable en términos de tiempo. No es una serie pesada y larga con mil temporadas.

Literal. Para mí, por muy efecto shock que sea el final, no tiene sentido continuarla. Realmente espero que respeten la historia de los personajes y lo dejen ahí.

CARLA
También tiene una vibra bastante fresca. La forma en la que está contada, el soundtrack, la dirección de arte. Está como hecha para gente que quiere ver algo bueno y conciso. No me da sensación de serie de varias temporadas.
(It also has a pretty fresh vibe. The way it’s told, the soundtrack, the art direction. It’s kind of made for people who want to see something good and concise. It doesn’t give me the feeling of a multi-season series.)

MAURA
