1. ¿Qué estás haciendo en México?
What are you doing in Mexico?
Posibles respuestas: (Possible answers:)
- Visitando. (Visiting.)
- Estoy trabajando. (I’m working.)
- Me vine a vivir acá hace un año. (I came to live here a year ago.)
2. ¿Estás aquí solo o con tu familia?
Are you here by yourself or with your family?
Posibles respuestas: (Possible answers:)
- Estoy aquí sola. Mi familia está en Nueva York. (I’m here by myself. My family is in New York.)
- Estoy aquí con mi familia. (I’m here with my family.)
3. ¿Te gusta la comida mexicana?
Do you like Mexican food?
Here it’s really important that if you don’t like Mexican food, you just keep it to yourself.
Why? Well, because us Mexicans are very sensitive about our food and we will think there must be something weird about you if you don’t like our marvelous food.
Only acceptable answers:
- ¡Me encanta! (I love it!)
- Sí, ¡me gusta mucho! (Yes, I really like it!)
Now use this one when you’re not too crazy about it.
- Sí, me gusta, pero casi no la puedo comer. Por mi estómago, es muy sensible. (Yes, I like it, but I can barely eat it. Because of my stomach, it is very sensible.)
4. ¿Qué te gusta más?
What do you like more? This is a continuation of the last question.
- ¡Los tacos al pastor! (Pastor tacos!)
- Los tamales (Tamales!)
- El mole (Mole)
- El pozole (Pozole)
Now if you’re that… peculiar person who doesn’t love Mexican food, answer this:
- Las quesadillas de solo queso con guacamole. (Quesadillas with only cheese and guacamole.)
This is a great answer, because you’re letting them know that you like simple flavors, so they won’t offer you to try anything crazy like tacos de tripa o tacos de sesos and we Mexicans love a simple quesadilla and guac, so, you’re still an acceptable human.
¿Te está gustando este video? Si es así, dime en los comentarios. Y si no… (Are you liking this video? If so, tell me in the comments. If not…) Let me know why. I want to continue improving for you!
5. ¿Qué piensas de los mexicanos?
What do you think about Mexicans?
- Son muy buenas personas. (They are very good people.)
- Son muy cálidos y amables. (They are very warm and nice.)
- Son maravillosos. (They are marvelous.)
Son = They are. Remember that in Spanish, the verb To be is kind of split into two: Ser and Estar.
In this case, because we’re talking about characteristics, we use SER. Which is also used to talk about occupation, origin, time…etc. But don’t think too much about it, it is very difficult to memorize rules and try to apply them.
We don’t do this at Spring Spanish. Instead we use Conversation Based Chunking, a system that allows people to expedite their way into fluency.

Are you liking/enjoying Mexico? Or whatever Latin country…
